In the 1940s, ex-WWII pilots became bush pilots flying canoeists deep into the Quetico-Superior wilderness. The Boundary Waters called to a generation hungry for adventure after the war. This luxury tent brings that deep-forest spirit to the Wisconsin Northwoods — historic tourism posters, canoe country décor, and a stunning view of the pines. No floatplane required. Sleeps 4.
Prices start at: $154 per night (+taxes and fees)
When World War II ended, the pilots who had flown missions over Europe pointed their planes north — toward the Quetico-Superior wilderness, the Boundary Waters, and the remote lakes of the Canadian border country. By the late 1940s, Ely, Minnesota was the largest freshwater seaplane base in the United States, with up to 38 flights daily carrying canoeists into the backcountry. A generation hungry for wildness after years of war found it in the deep forest. This luxury tent captures that spirit, curated with historic Boundary Waters tourism posters and canoe country décor as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. Nestled in the trees with a stunning view of the Northwoods, it’s the closest thing to the Canadian wilderness without crossing a border.
Inside: a full memory foam bed with upscale linens, four cots with fluffy mattresses and luxury bedding, and a round picnic table — sleeping 4 comfortably. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, tiki torches, picnic table, and private firepit. A POV Power Station powers phones, laptops, fans, CPAP machines, and low-draw appliances. Mulch ground cover — no mud. Propane space heater provided — bring or purchase 1 lb canisters. Parking for one vehicle; overflow at the bathhouse. Water station available at the bathhouse.
NO PETS ALLOWED.

Ex-WWII bush pilots, the Boundary Waters boom, and the Northwoods as America’s cathedral of paddling
In the 1940s, the deep wilderness pulled a particular camper north — past the resorts, past the last road, into the lakes and portages of the Minnesota-Ontario border. Ex-WWII pilots became bush pilots, flying canoeists into the Quetico-Superior wilderness. By the late 1940s, Ely, Minnesota was the largest freshwater seaplane base in the country — 38 flights a day into the backcountry. The Northwoods had become America’s cathedral of paddling. This tent is for the camper who needed more than a campsite — who needed water, silence, portage, and wilderness at the very edge of the map.
