Wolf’s Lair – Unit 4 is one of POV Resort’s premiere side-by-side two-bedroom units that sleeps 6. It is nestled in the trees yet is only a short walk to the shore.

POV Resort is also home to America’s first Living History Museum of Camping and the Cabins, Cocktails & Crockpots heritage exhibit — original research telling the story of the Wisconsin Northwoods family vacation through every decade. Each cabin is part of a larger narrative about how these vacations came to be: the GI Bill, the Federal Highway Act, the Fisherman’s Special railroad, the era your cabin was built. The museum room is open year-round. Your stay is part of that story.

Unit Description

Wolf’s Lair – Unit 4 is a lovely year-round cabin combining the charm of a Northwoods cottage with the conveniences of a home. The newly-renovated unit has a spacious living room/dining area, a fully-outfitted kitchen, and an updated roomy and bright full bathroom. The unit also has an electric fireplace stove – great for year-round ambience. A picnic table, fire ring, and charcoal and gas grills are right outside your door on the spacious deck. 

The first bedroom has a queen-sized bed, and the second bedroom has two twin beds and a set of bunk beds – very popular with kids! Bedrooms have comfortable firm memory-foam beds and upscale bedding. Fresh linens, blankets, pillows, towels, TP & paper towels, and bathroom/kitchen soaps are provided.

PETS: No pets allowed in this unit.

In the 1950s, everything changed. For the first time, most American workers had paid vacation time — and they used it. The Interstate Highway System was under construction, the travel trailer industry was booming, and heading to a Wisconsin lake for a week became the great American summer ritual. This 1953 Pathfinder is a genuine artifact of that era, curated as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — the first of its kind in America. You’re not just booking a vintage camper. You’re inhabiting a decade.

Inside you’ll find period-authentic 1950s décor, a queen bed, and a full futon — sleeping up to 4 guests comfortably. A food prep area is included for snacks and cooler meals (no appliances or running water inside). For bathroom needs, guests use our shared bathhouse, cleaned 2–3 times daily. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, Edison string lights, picnic table, and a private firepit. A shared gas grill station with provided tanks is also available in the campground. Basic electricity powers lights, phone chargers, fans, CPAP machines, and low-draw appliances. A propane space heater is provided — bring or purchase 1 lb canisters (one gets you through the night). One parking spot at your site; overflow at the bathhouse.

Families drove to national forests, state parks, and Northwoods resorts with Coleman stoves, new trailers, and paid vacation weeks. Wisconsin’s lake resorts reached their golden peak. In the 1930s, Americans dreamed big from wherever they stood. Hawaii was exotic, distant, and impossibly glamorous — and that’s exactly why tiki culture exploded on the mainland during the Depression. People couldn’t travel far, so they transformed their backyards, their campsites, and their imaginations. This 16-foot round yurt-style luxury tent is that dream made real, curated as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. Tucked among tall trees with a view of the woods, it’s a short walk from the bathhouse and a world away from ordinary.

Inside: a queen bed, full futon, two cots with mattresses and luxury bedding & and kitchen table — sleeping up to 6. Natural light floods the circular space, and the festive tiki décor does the rest. Outside on the deck: charcoal grill, hammock, tiki torches, picnic table, and a private firepit. A shared gas grill station with provided tanks is available in the campground. A POV Power Station powers phones, laptops, fans, CPAP machines, and low-draw appliances. Mulch ground cover keeps things clean underfoot. The CCC built America’s campgrounds, the Northwoods became a refuge, and the tiki bar offered a different kind of escape.

The Depression made camping a necessity. The Civilian Conservation Corps employed 300,000 young men building the campground infrastructure America still uses — fire rings, picnic tables, forest trails. State parks charged 25 cents a night. Wisconsin’s Northwoods became a refuge: lake resorts offered Chicago and Milwaukee families an affordable summer that felt like real life, suspended. This yurt captures the era’s parallel escape — the tiki bar world of Don the Beachcomber, opened in Hollywood in 1933, where Depression-weary Americans found the tropics without a passport. This fully renovated Holiday Rambler is themed around that iconic drink and the decade that invented it: Earth Day, the open road, and groovy Northwoods nights. On June 7, 1972, Bobby Lozoff created the Tequila Sunrise at the Trident Restaurant in Sausalito. Mick Jagger ordered one, loved it, and the Rolling Stones ordered them at every tour stop for the rest of the year. That same summer, this Holiday Rambler was rolling off the line — American-made, built for the open road, groovy as the decade itself. This fully renovated vintage camper is curated around that moment as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. The 1970s brought Earth Day, environmental consciousness, and a generation that fell back in love with the outdoors. Climb in and feel it.

One in six families owned a camper — the decade of KOA, Winnebago, environmental consciousness, and the weekend getaway as American ritual

By 1973, one in six American families owned a camper. KOA had grown from one Montana campground to 600 franchises nationally. Winnebago was rolling motorhomes off assembly lines. The weekend getaway had become America’s dominant vacation form — fill the tank, load the trailer, find a site somewhere that wasn’t home. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring had seeded a new environmental consciousness, pulling a generation back to the woods for belonging, not just leisure. Wisconsin’s Northwoods felt that pull acutely. This Holiday Rambler was built in 1972, its interior designed in the warm oranges and golds of a Tequila Sunrise.

Two private upstairs loft bedrooms, mid-century décor, and a two-story design that no one else was bold enough to try. Sleep in a genuine piece of American history. Sleeps 6.

In 1952, the Lighthouse Company of Chicago built something no one had attempted before — a two-story travel trailer. Not a loft, not a bunk. Two full private bedroom levels, stacked, rolling down the American highway. It was the postwar boom at its most audacious: bigger, bolder, better. Today only 8 of these are known to exist anywhere in the world. You can sleep in one of them.

This fully renovated double-decker is curated in mid-century décor as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. Upstairs: two private loft queen bedrooms. Downstairs: a full futon in the living area and a dining and food prep room — sleeping up to 6 total. No appliances or running water inside; bathhouse is nearby, cleaned 2–3 times daily. A changing room is provided for convenience. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, Edison string lights, picnic table, and private firepit. Shared gas grill station with provided tanks in the campground. Basic electricity for lights, chargers, fans, CPAP machines, and low-draw appliances. Propane space heater provided — bring or purchase 1 lb canisters. Parking for two vehicles; overflow at the bathhouse.

By 1952, the US Forest Service hosted four million campers a year. Three in five American families owned a car, gas cost 20 cents, and Wisconsin’s Northwoods was in its golden age — Chicago families returning to the same lake, the same cabin, the same firepit, year after year. Into this world came the Lighthouse Duplex Trailer: designed by Richard Ten Eyck, built in Chicago, unlike anything before or since — 28 feet of trailer, 48 feet of living space, a patented central staircase, two private upstairs bedrooms. One of only 8 known to survive. Camping had never looked quite like this.

By 1960, camping at national parks had doubled in a decade. The Interstate Highway System opened the continent, and trailers followed the asphalt everywhere. Wisconsin’s Northwoods resorts reached peak generational tradition — families who’d grown up coming north now returning with their own children, year after year. The Wolfe Fiesta and Siesta was built in this era of maximum mobility, when a trailer meant freedom to go anywhere, and some campers looked south to Mexico — for warmth, color, and a different kind of outdoor adventure than the pine forest offered.

It’s 1949 and the war is over. Soldiers came home, surplus canvas tents flooded the market, and Americans hit the Northwoods in droves for the first time. This site pairs a rare 1949 Jim Dandy vintage camper — the only one of its kind known to exist — with a companion 1940s luxury glamping tent, complete with the original owners’ photographs still inside. Two units, one decade, sleeps 6.

When World War II ended, America went camping. The same canvas tents that had sheltered soldiers were suddenly available at surplus stores for a few dollars — field-tested, durable, and cheap. Ex-military pilots became bush pilots flying canoeists into the Wisconsin wilderness. Paid vacations arrived. And families like the one who built this Jim Dandy packed up and headed north. This site pairs their actual camper — the only 1949 Jim Dandy known to exist, still bearing photographs of the couple who built and loved it — with a companion 1940s luxury glamping tent, together curated as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first.

The vintage Jim Dandy sleeps 2 on a full futon with a food prep area inside. Snug by design — that’s the authentic character of early American camping, and it’s the point. The companion 1940s luxury tent sleeps 4: a full memory foam bed with upscale bedding, two cots with luxury bedding, and charming period décor — dark inside for guests who love to sleep in. The only known surviving Jim Dandy — hand-built on a Model T, complete with original plans, receipts, and the couple who built it

World War II ended and Americans returned ready to move. For the first time, most employers offered paid vacations — and families drove an average of 600 miles, two weeks on the road. Wisconsin’s Northwoods resort industry boomed. This Jim Dandy Cabin Cruiser was hand-built by an American couple on a Model T chassis, using mail-order plans and a handwritten parts list. Their receipt — every item, every cost — hangs inside with their photograph. It is the oldest known surviving Jim Dandy. You’re not just camping in a vintage trailer. You’re camping inside someone’s life’s work.

#10 – 1920s Capone’s Luxury Tent (A-Frame Style)

The island just off POV’s shore was owned by Al Capone’s doctor. Goons with tommy guns patrolled its outer shores. Gangsters hid out in these lakes during Prohibition, smuggling Canadian whisky south to Chicago. This A-frame luxury tent — the most secluded site in the campground — is decked out with historic Capone photographs and memorabilia. The lam never looked this good. Sleeps 6.

During Prohibition, the Wisconsin Northwoods were Al Capone’s backyard. The island just off POV Resort’s shore was owned by Capone’s personal physician, and it’s said that armed goons patrolled its outer shores while gangsters used these remote lakes to hide out and move Canadian whisky south to Chicago. The same lakes your kayak will cross tomorrow. This A-frame luxury tent — a replica of the canvas tents used in the 1920s and 30s, and perhaps on this very shoreline — is the most secluded glamping site at POV Resort, curated with historic photographs and Prohibition-era memorabilia as part of America’s first Living History Museum of Camping.

Private, wooded, and completely off the grid from the other campsites, it has a covered porch with a view deep into the forest — no neighbors in sight, just trees, stars, and the firepit glow. Inside: a queen bed and two full futons sleeping up to 6, plus a kitchen table. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, tiki torches, two picnic tables, and a private firepit. This A-frame luxury tent is decked out with historic Dillinger photographs and Prohibition-era memorabilia — one of the most secluded sites at POV Resort. Bring your crew and your best getaway plan. John Dillinger knew what the gangsters knew: the Wisconsin Northwoods were the perfect place to disappear. While the FBI hunted America’s most wanted across the Midwest, Dillinger and his crew found refuge in the remote lakes and forests of Vilas County — the same lakes your kayak will cross tomorrow. This A-frame luxury tent is a replica of the canvas tents used in the 1920s and 30s, curated with historic Dillinger photographs and Prohibition-era memorabilia as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. One of the most secluded sites in the campground, with a covered porch overlooking deep forest and no neighboring campsites in sight.

Inside: a queen bed, full futon, and kitchen table sleeping up to 4. The site also has room for a 2-person BYO sidecar tent — sleeping 6 total. Wally Byam designed it to last forever — and he was right. This 1965 Airstream is the most iconic camper in American history, and it’s the only site at POV Resort with full electric hookup. The 1960s brought the Wilderness Act, the environmental movement, and a silver bullet on every highway. Yours is waiting. Sleeps 4.

In 1965, the Airstream was already a legend. Wally Byam’s vision — aerodynamic, timeless, built to outlast everything around it — had become the symbol of American adventure on the open road. The 1960s brought the Wilderness Act, a new environmental conscience, and millions of families discovering that the best destination was wherever the highway took them. This fully renovated 1965 Airstream is curated in mid-century décor as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. And it’s the only campsite at POV with full electric hookup.

Inside: a full bed and two single beds, all with memory foam mattresses and luxury bedding — sleeping up to 4. A food prep area with microwave and mini fridge (no stove or running water). Changing room for convenience; bathhouse nearby, cleaned 2–3 times daily. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, tiki torches, picnic table, and private firepit. Wisconsin’s Northwoods resorts reached peak generational tradition — families who’d grown up coming north now returning with their own children, year after year. The Wolfe Fiesta and Siesta was built in this era of maximum mobility, when a trailer meant freedom to go anywhere, and some campers looked south to Mexico — for warmth, color, and a different kind of outdoor adventure than the pine forest offered.
