Unit Description
In 1952, the Lighthouse Company of Chicago built something no one had attempted before — a two-story travel trailer. Not a loft, not a bunk. Two full private bedroom levels, stacked, rolling down the American highway. It was the postwar boom at its most audacious: bigger, bolder, better. Today only 8 of these are known to exist anywhere in the world. You can sleep in one of them.
This fully renovated double-decker is curated in mid-century décor as part of POV Resort’s Living History Museum of Camping — America’s first. Upstairs: two private loft queen bedrooms. Downstairs: a full futon in the living area and a dining and food prep room — sleeping up to 6 total. No appliances or running water inside; bathhouse is nearby, cleaned 2–3 times daily. A changing room is provided for convenience. Outside: charcoal grill, hammock, Edison string lights, picnic table, and private firepit. Shared gas grill station with provided tanks in the campground. Basic electricity for lights, chargers, fans, CPAP machines, and low-draw appliances. Propane space heater provided — bring or purchase 1 lb canisters. Parking for two vehicles; overflow at the bathhouse.

By 1952, the US Forest Service hosted four million campers a year. Three in five American families owned a car, gas cost 20 cents, and Wisconsin’s Northwoods was in its golden age — Chicago families returning to the same lake, the same cabin, the same firepit, year after year. Into this world came the Lighthouse Duplex Trailer: designed by Richard Ten Eyck, built in Chicago, unlike anything before or since — 28 feet of trailer, 48 feet of living space, a patented central staircase, two private upstairs bedrooms. One of only 8 known to survive. Camping had never looked quite like this.
