WHAT IS SWIMMERS ITCH? WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

WHAT IS IT? | (Sometimes called Duck Itch) swimmer’s itch is a parasite sporadically found in many Northwoods lakes in the summer, including on occasion North Twin Lake.

WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?

    • Typically when high air temps reach around 85°+ for 4+ days in a row & winds have been stagnant or consistently blowing onshore here, conditions can make for a swimmers itch bloom along POV’s shore.
    • It is easiest to be affected when swimmers are in/out of shallow waters and not taking precautions.
    • The vast majority of the summer weeks there are no swimmers itch conditions or cases present off our shore at POV Resort.
    • However, after a storm & cooler temps the bloom will clear out and things are in the clear again.

HOW TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR IT

    • We post a “LOW” advisory when conditions aren’t present and cases haven’t been reported recently.
    • We post a “HIGH” advisory when conditions are present and/or cases have been reported nearby.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE AFFECTED

    • When you are affected by the parasite you can get an itchy rash that lasts several days.
    • Calamine lotion, baking soda baths, and staying cool help feel better faster.
    • We have all of these on site at the POV Store. Popsicles don’t hurt either.

BEST PRACTICE PREVENTION  |  The good news is there are some easy ways to be extra careful and avoid exposure. To reduce chances of being impacted we recommend you…

    1. Lather up everywhere with waterproof sunscreen or the special swimmers itch cream we sell at our store (it forms a preventative barrier to the parasite).
    2. Swim later in the day (less chance of bloom then).
    3. Avoid lounging in surface/shallow waters (go in the water to a bit deeper water and stay in the water).
    4. Immediately shower off at our shower on the docks after getting out.
    5. Briskly towel off right after to get any potential bloom residue off your skin.

WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?We are working with the North and South Twin Lake District Association, the DNR, and state elected officials to find ways to mitigate this phenomenon however allowed. Note – all over the Northwoods this is becoming a common occurrence, not just an issue on our lake. We are also trying to do our best to keep an eye on conditions/reported cases and keep our guests informed.

DO YOU HAVE BOAT SLIPS AVAILABLE FOR GUESTS?

Our resort does have its own boat launch, and each cabin comes with its own boat slip. Our boat slips do have electric ran to them. If you choose to bring your own boat for the campgrounds or a second boat for a cabin, a $10.00/day fee for launch and slip rental is required – we have a few slips available on a first-come first-serve basis. They are extra wide for larger boats as well. Reserve one of our extra wide boat slips at https://povresort.com/boat-rentals

WHERE CAN I BUY A FISHING LICENSE?

The closest location you can buy a fishing license is at the Phelps Convenience Center. Visit here for more information on what they offer.

WHERE CAN I CLEAN FISH?

The resort has a fish cleaning hut near the lake for guests’ use. There is no fishing cleaning allowed within any of the cabins. Fish are to be disposed at the fish cleaning station and guts placed in the freezer in the fish cleaning hut – see instructions.

IS THE RESORT RV-FRIENDLY AND HAVE HOOKUPS?

We have purposely kept our campsites rustic to minimize disturbing the woods – we took down as few trees as possible to keep the forest intact. Camping at POV isn’t typical Northwoods seclusion – our campsites are cozy but not on top of each other. We feel the amenities on-site and the beauty of the forest and surrounding area more than make up for the snug nature of the campgrounds. With this goal, there isn’t enough turnaround for most RVs, travel trailers, and boat trailers in the campgrounds in this BYOTent campsites. Generators are only allowed if they have silent technology to keep the sound to a minimum for all guests of the campgrounds. We allow for *SMALL* campers in Campsite 6, and the lengths of campers (including the hitch) in these campsites should not to exceed 25 feet (due to small turn radius).

DO THE LUXURY TENTS AND VINTAGE CAMPERS HAVE HEAT, LIGHT AND POWER?

Yes – We are serious about the glam in camping at POV.

Our glamping units all have Mr. Heater Portable Heaters. You can either bring your own 1 LB propane canisters or buy them at our store. One canister is usually what is needed overnight. All glamping units must be ventilated during use of the heaters. A carbon monoxide detector provided. The luxury tents also have LED lights and Power Stations included in the rental rate – these Power Stations can charge phones, laptops, fans, COPD machines, and other low-powered appliances, etc. Our vintage campers have power able to provide electricity to small, low-powered appliances, lights, etc.
